Citizen alerted CCF Thane about “Request to implement Wildlife Protection Laws strictly”

On 24 October 2009, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAW-Mumbai) Office received a copy of letter send by Citizen Ms. Amruta Walke to Mr. Shree Bhagwan (IFS) Chief Conservator of Forest Thane  and copy of it have been forwarded to The Commissioner of Police Thane in regards to “Request to Implement Wildlife Protection Laws strictly”.

The brief letter written by Alert Citizen in her words………………………..

According to Circular No.D-8(4)/WLP/OW/128/07-08, Thane 400 603, Dated 24/7/2007 of Chief Conservator of Forest Thane, it says : The Indian Elephant is listed at S.No.12-B in Schedule – 1 of The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002.

It is prohibited to bring or keep Indian Elephant within the limited of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation without valid ownership with condition stipulated by Forest Department of Maharashtra.

Any possession with the above mentioned limited is treated illegal and violates – The Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002 & other related laws.

I regularly see an elephant in Thane (West), on the station road, outside JumboKing Vadapav shop.

The poor animal is made to stand for hours in the scorching heat in the congested area where even we human beings are unable to walk properly.

This innocent animal is made to be and stand & walk on the Tar Road which results into foot crack and most importantly, the poor animal is kept away from socialization; elephant being a social animal, naturally it prefers to live in herds.

In view of the vital importance of the above matter, please turn over new leaf by strictly enforcing the Wildlife Protection Laws on the carpet and hammer out.

I invoke your good office to look into the matter please.

Thanking you in anticipation.
