Citizen alerted CCF Thane about “Elephant at Mira Road and Malad Area”

On 05 March 2010, Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAW-Mumbai) Office received a copy of letter send by Citizen Mr. Ryan Braganza to Mr. Shree Bhagwan (IFS) Chief Conservator of Forest Thane in regards to “Elephant at Mira Road and Malad Area”.

The brief letter written by Alert Citizen in his words………………………..

This is bring to your notice, about an elephant which is being used for begging at Mumbai, I have seen this elephant at Malad, mostly during the evenings at New Era Signal close the Malad west Station, and twice at Mira Road opposite Rasaaz Cinema.

I kindly request you to take strong action against the owner of this elephant, who is violating the law which does not allow elephants within Mumbai City, and secondly the Asian elephant comes under the Wildlife Protection Act.

I have attached 2 photographs of the elephant with this letter.

Citizen spotted Elephant in Mira Road & Malad - Mumbai



Mira Road
Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) Thane circular says “In order to stop this violation, it is hereby prohibited to bring or keep Indian Elephant within Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Thane Municipal Corporation without valid ownership with conditions stipulated by Forest Department of Maharashtra”.
 
Malad West
On 3rd March 2010 Wednesday, an elephant been spotted using for begging on busy road  at Mira Road and it is clear from photograph they are use for commercial purpose to earn money by displaying it in public. And elephant is also seen in mostly   during the evening time at New Era Signal near to the Malad West Station.
