POWAI, Mumbai | Monday 13, January 2014 : Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) Office received a call from an animal Lover at 8:00 PM, who spotted an Elephant using in function at Powai, following to the information PAWS-Mumbai Activist and Hony. Animal Welfare Officer informed the officers ...of forest department (Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) West Region : Suresh Thorat, Chief Conservator of Forest Thane : K.P. Singh, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forest Thane : Anwar Ahmed, Range Forest Officer Mumbai : Anil Toradmal) and also trace out the location by following the elephant.

As per the information the elephant was belongs to Sabhashankar B. Pandey from Dahisar and was using it for the annual festival Thiru Aaratu organized by Shree Ayyappa Seva Sangham Powai – Powai Ayyappa Temple. While Forest Staff recoding the statement of Mahout and Organiser, the owner Sabhashankar Pandey along with around 10 -15 People including his son Saresh Pandey (29) reached the spot, later he started creating issue and stated assaulted, threated the activist Sunish Subramanian Kunju. While activist call-up Police Control Helpline100 and on the ways to Police Station Saresh Pandey and his people attacked the activist. In this regards complaint was registered at Powai Police Station (NC No. 173/14 Dated 14.01.2014 Under Section 506, 323) by Sunish Subramanian Kunju.

As per the information received since 2 weeks the elephants been seen using it for begging at Dahisar, As per the Circular dated 28th October 2013 of Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) West Region states that “The Elephant is listed at S. No. 12 – B in Schedule – 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act 2002. The Elephant is often brought within the city limits of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. These elephants are brought in to : give joy ride, beg; entertain Guests at wedding; act in serials and movies; bless and entertain guests at functions at temples and political rallies. All of the activities carried out by the Elephant are in contravention with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972”.

On October 17, 2013 Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai team lead by Abhhijeet Rane and Sunish Subramanian Kunju met Chief Conservator of Forests – Thane Shri. K. P. Singh (IFS) to submit SAVE JUMBO Citizen Report along with Protest Letter from Member of Parliament Shri. Sanjay Dina Patil, Shri. Sanjay Nirupam and Shri. Sanjeev Ganesh Naik, Member of Legislative Assembly Shri. Krishna Hegde, Maharashtra Legislative Council Shri. Charan Singh Sapra, Municipal Councilor Shri. Pravin Chheda, NGO’s Parivartan Pratishthan, Abhijeet Rane Youth Foundation and Ankur Pratishthan, Dhadak Kamgar Union and with 100 letters from animal lovers across the citizen demanding total banning of Elephants into the limit of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and entire Jurisdiction of CCF Thane with immediate effect by implementation of Existing Animal Welfare Laws as per our Constitution of India. There was 30 minutes discussion on the various issue in the presence of Deputy Conservator of Forests- Thane Shri. Anwar Ahmed and Divisional Forest Officer – Vigilence Shri. H. G. Dhumal. PAWS-Mumbai also requested to register FIR/ Action under Wildlife (Protection) Act for been seen violating the laws by using the elephants for begging without any proper care action should be taken against owner of 2 Elephants (Laxmi – Female – Age 25 Years and Rupkali – Female – Age 30 Years) Mr. Sabhashankar B. Pandey and to send the elephant to rehabilitation Center.
